What can I do to reduce basement flooding while waiting for a crew?

  • If you decide to start cleaning in an emergency, wear the proper clothing: overalls, gloves, protective eyeglasses, rubber boots and a face mask to shield yourself from harmful toxins.
  • Stay away from electrical equipment. Do not try to change fuses or touch anything that receives power!
  • Shut off electrical power, if possible. Be careful!
  • Open basement windows to allow fresh air to come in. This can also prevent odors and speed the drying process.
  • Remove items of value that are in or near by the source of water.
  • Remove rugs from source of water.
  • To reduce dampness, use fans and humidifiers
  • Scrub affected furniture with antibacterial soap and water and place outside to dry (weather permitting), or steam clean.
